Safe Kids

Every year in America, one in four kids requires medical attention for accidental injuries, and over 9,000 families endure the heartbreaking loss of a child due to a preventable injury. These tragedies leave lifelong impacts on families and our communities. But there’s good news—almost 90% of these injuries can be prevented! Led by Cobb & Douglas Public Health for over 30 years, the Safe Kids Coalitions of Cobb and Douglas Counties are on a mission to help families keep their kids safe. Through education, hands-on support, community engagement, and access to safety equipment, we’re giving parents right here in Cobb and Douglas counties the gift of safety. We envision a community where kids can grow, play, and thrive in safe, injury-free environments.

We reduce childhood injuries through:

  • Partnerships: Collaborating with schools and community organizations to spread safety awareness.
  • Advocacy: Supporting policies like car seat laws and safe playgrounds.
  • Education: Hosting workshops and events for all parents and caregivers.
  • Safety Equipment: Providing essentials like helmets, cribs and car seats for families in need with guidance on their proper use.

OUR LATEST INITIATIVE

Cobb & Douglas Health Foundation_Newsletter Header_Golf Classic

Cobb Public Safety Charity Golf Classic

Since 2004, Cobb & Douglas Public Health, in partnership with Cobb County Public Safety leaders and generous sponsors, has proudly hosted the annual charity golf tournament. Benefiting Safe Kids Cobb County and Cobb County Safety Village, this beloved event is both a celebration of community spirit and a heartfelt tribute to our local first responders, who work tirelessly to keep children safe. Thanks to your support—and the participation of 200 golfers–we raised nearly $100,000 this year! These funds provide safety technicians, life-saving education, and essential equipment to families throughout Cobb County. By participating, sponsoring, or giving, you are doing more than supporting a tournament—you are giving the gift of health and safety to countless children and families. Together, we are driving change – one swing at a time!

Mark your calendar for October 12, 2026 for next year’s tournament.  Contact Lisa Crossman (lisa.crossman@dph.ga.gov) if you’d like to support or be involved in the event.

Health and Hope in Action

When Cobb County mom, Heather L., faced a heartbreaking challenge when her child outgrew a traditional car seat but still required more support than a booster seat could provide, she found Safe Kids at the Cobb County Safety Village. She discovered it was just what she needed. The team’s expert car seat safety technicians evaluated her child’s unique needs and recommended a Roosevelt Child Safety Car Seat, designed to accommodate children up to 5’2” tall. This car seat, with adjustable shoulder straps and enhanced stability, was the perfect solution for her child’s safety. Heather said, “Thanks to Safe Kids Cobb’s compassionate and knowledgeable staff, I was able to order the car seat and submit paperwork to my health insurance provider with their assistance. Once the car seat arrived, they installed it and ensured it fit my child properly.”  Heather’s relief and gratitude were clear: “I breathed a sigh of relief. I’m so thankful I discovered Safe Kids! The staff were so knowledgeable, I felt like I had experts on my team. They gave me hope and peace of mind.” Thanks to donors like you, families like Heather’s receive life-saving resources and the priceless gift of safety.

Our Everyday Health Heroes

Safe Kids Injury Prevention Director, Dianna Vaughn shares why she’s proud to be part of this critical work.

“At Safe Kids, our mission is to keep children safe, whether at home, at play, or on the way. From car seat safety to water safety and safe sleep practices, we provide families with vital resources and support.

One of my most memorable moments was helping a mom with 13-day-old twins whose car seats were incorrectly installed, blocking their airways. After adjusting the seats, she was incredibly relieved, and her grandmother told me, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing because it saves lives.’ It’s moments like these that make me so proud of the work we do.

We understand the challenges families face, from financial barriers to language differences, and we go above and beyond to help. With support from generous donors, we provide safety education and equipment to ensure every family has the resources they need to reduce unintentional injuries in our community.”

Since 1994, the Cobb & Douglas Health Foundation has been dedicated to supporting Cobb & Douglas Public Health by providing financial, fundraising, and advocacy efforts in their mission “to promote and protect the health and safety of the residents of Cobb and Douglas counties.”

While tax dollars provide a foundation of support, they are not enough. That’s why over 40%—about $12 million each year—of Cobb & Douglas Public Health funding comes from fees and generous contributions made by individuals, businesses, civic groups, and foundations. These funds are essential to continue the work in protecting public health.

The Foundation Board takes a strategic approach to make the greatest impact where it’s needed most. Fundraising efforts are focused on critical health issues facing Cobb and Douglas County residents.

In 2024, The Cobb & Douglas Health Foundation prioritized raising funds to support Douglas Safe Kids. The Board set a goal of $25,000 and through the leadership of our Foundation Secretary/Treasurer Shandron Forte of POSolutions in Douglas County, the Board and staff raised over $64,000! We extend a heartfelt thank you to Shan for her dedication and advocacy and to all our donors for their contributions!
