For years leading up to the pandemic, Cobb & Douglas Public Health recognized the growing need to expand the South Cobb Public Health Center to better serve the health needs of our community. Originally built in 2000 on the South Cobb Recreation Campus with joint public and private funding, this 4,000-square-foot facility is only large enough to providing essential services, including WIC Nutrition and prenatal case management.
In collaboration with Cobb County Government, we have spent extensive time exploring options to either expand the current facility or relocate to a site that could accommodate a wider array of services. This led to a promising partnership with the Mableton Development Authority, which is generously donating property on Riverside Parkway near the I-20 interchange. They are also taking on the role of master developer for the expansive 50-acre site.
Funding for this ambitious project comes from multiple sources. In 2020, Cobb & Douglas Public Health secured up to $2 million in Cobb SPLOST funds, allocated $4.5 million in reserves, and in 2023, received $7 million in Cobb American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Our vision is to establish a comprehensive health campus offering a variety of services, including STI/HIV diagnostics and treatment, adult and pediatric primary care, dental and mental health services, a choice pantry, and connections to other community resources. The entire project is estimated to cost $18 million.
We are actively seeking additional public and private funding partners to bring this vision to life. The Cobb & Douglas Health Foundation has proudly made this project one of its primary focus areas.
