Children’s Medical Services

Cobb & Douglas Health Foundation-Children's Medical Services

Children’s Medical Services is a program designed to assure that eligible children with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, craniofacial anomalies, orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions, diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, spina bifida, epilepsy, and hearing or vision concerns, receive specialty medical care in Georgia. Children (birth to 21 years of age) with eligible medical conditions, who live in Cobb or Douglas counties and meet income eligibility, may receive comprehensive care coordination. Services are family-centered, culturally/linguistically competent and community-based. Care coordination provides referrals to medical specialists and diagnostic testing and links to community resources and assistance to apply for resources, such as State and Charity financial aid and medication assistance programs.

Success Story

“Ryan”, a bright fifth grader, faced a daunting challenge as frequent seizures—occurring twice a month—disrupted his school life and posed a severe threat to his safety. These episodes not only frightened his teachers and classmates but also interrupted learning activities, casting a shadow over his school experience.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, a dedicated Cobb & Douglas Public Health nurse intervened, determined to change the course of Ryan’s life. She collaborated with Children’s Medical Services to ensure the availability of extra seizure medication at school, a critical step in safeguarding Ryan during his school day. Further, she partnered with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to refine Ryan’s treatment plan, introducing an innovative approach using a nerve stimulator and magnet to halt seizures as they began.

The nurse’s commitment didn’t stop there. She coordinated with Social Services and Ryan’s school to closely monitor his response to these changes, ensuring a seamless integration of care. Training school staff on how to effectively use the magnet and medications was pivotal to maintaining Ryan’s safety and confidence.

Thanks to this remarkable teamwork and the nurse’s unwavering dedication, Ryan’s seizures are now under control. He has embraced the joys and challenges of middle school, thriving in an environment where learning and laughter prevail. Ryan’s story is a testament to the powerful impact of coordinated healthcare efforts, turning potential adversity into a story of triumph and hope.
