Children 1st

Cobb & Douglas Health Foundation-Children First

Children 1st is a statewide, free, voluntary initiative coordinated by the Georgia Department of Public Health and your local Public Health Department, in this case Cobb & Douglas Public Health. Any child (from birth-age 5) with developmental, social or medical needs can be referred to the program. A Public Health Nurse contacts the family and makes a home visit to help the family access local medical services and social supports. These services are designed to support families with young children, promote child health/development and positively influence school readiness.

Children 1st

Success Story

When “Claire” entered the world, her journey began with hurdles that no newborn should face. She failed her initial hearing screening, prompting a referral to Children 1st for essential follow-up. During a crucial visit to Claire’s home, a vigilant CDPH visiting nurse observed that the infant’s mouth turned down and her right eye squinted—potential signs of Bell’s palsy or facial paralysis. Adding to the family’s challenges, Claire’s mother was awaiting hospital test results, had no pediatrician lined up for Claire, and faced these difficulties without family support or a safe space for her baby to sleep.

The nurse’s visit became a turning point for Claire. Recognizing the urgent needs, she arranged for a “pack-n-play” crib, ensuring Claire’s sleeping environment was safe. With compassion and resourcefulness, the nurse guided Claire’s mother through enrolling in Medicaid, securing basic well care from a pediatrician and the specialized attention of a neurologist and audiologist for her daughter’s conditions. Claire also gained access to Children’s Medical Services, where financial assistance enabled her mother to purchase much-needed hearing aids.

As Claire continued in the Children 1st program, she received developmental screenings to monitor her progress, ensuring she was thriving. This comprehensive support network not only addressed her immediate needs but also laid the foundation for a healthier future. Claire’s story is a testament to the profound impact of dedicated healthcare professionals and programs like Children 1st, turning potential setbacks into a pathway of hope and growth.
